A Day at the Qtub Minar

This Saturday we jumped in two autorickshaws and puttered south through the streets of Delhi to the Qtub Minar. It's the site of the tallest minaret in India, and was built in the 1100's and early 1200's to celebrate Islam's victory over the last Hindu kingdom. The Muslim ruler decided to reuse existing Hindu and Buddhist structures to build his victory tower. He had to deface some graven images (by whacking off their sandstone faces) but many decorative details remained and many were added. It was another sunny, mild day in Delhi. We're enjoying the weather while we can--heat is on the way.
